Eddie Rooney

A formidable center and beloved clubman, Eddie Rooney was a cornerstone of the Gloucester rugby community, remembered for his uncompromising "brick wall" defense and deep-rooted local pride.

Eddie played for Coney Hill RFC in the centre before coming to Gloucester where he played between 1977 and 1979. During 1978-1979 season Eddie made 26 appearances. making 34 in all for the 1st team. He also played many games for Gloucester United. Eddie appears on the season’s Honours Board and team photograph for 1978-1979 season also United photograph 1977-1978, which can be seen in Lions Den.

A service to celebrate the life of Eddie, will be held at St Oswald Church, Coney Hill on Friday 13th December 2019, at 12 noon.

  • Began his senior rugby journey at Coney Hill RFC, where his physicality in the center quickly made him a standout player and a crowd favorite.

    1975: Journey Begins

  • Joined Gloucester RFC, initially making his mark with Gloucester United. He is featured in the 1977-1978 United team photograph, which is still displayed in the "Lions Den" at Kingsholm.

  • Enjoyed his most prolific season at the senior level, making 26 first-team appearances. His performances that year earned him a permanent place on the season’s Honours Board and in the official 1st XV team photograph.

    1978: Breakthrough First-Team Season

  • Concluded his 1st team career at Kingsholm with a total of 34 appearances, having established a reputation as a player who would "run through brick walls" for his teammates.

    1979: Gloucester Career Concludes

  • Returned his focus to Coney Hill RFC, serving as a mentor and a highly respected figure within the club. He remained a dedicated supporter of both Gloucester and Coney Hill throughout his life.

    1990: Community Mentor Role

  • Passed away peacefully at the age of 66 at his home on Painswick Road, surrounded by his wife, Linda, and his four daughters.

    2019: Peaceful Passing

  • His life was celebrated with a service at St Oswald Church, Coney Hill, where the local rugby community gathered to pay tribute to a man who represented the sport with "great dignity."
