Home Town: Cheltenham

Smile and the whole world smiles with you.

It is with pride and fond memories that we pay tribute to Evelyn Locke, a beloved member of the Gloucester Rugby community. She was 78 when she left us.

Born and raised in the heart of Cheltenham, Evelyn was a devoted daughter, sister, wife, mother, and friend. She touched the lives of many with her warmth, kindness, and infectious laughter. Evelyn’s journey began on 11th of May 1944 and from that day forward, she embraced every moment with unwavering optimism and a contagious love for life.

Evelyn dedicated her professional life to education, inspiring countless young minds as a devoted teacher for over three decades. Her passion for learning extended beyond the classroom, as she encouraged her students to explore the wonders of the world around them. Many former pupils remember her as not just a teacher, but a mentor and a friend.

Family was at the core of Evelyn’’s existence. She was a loving mother to three children, Michael, Susie and Lucy and a devoted wife to Roger. Together, they created a home filled with love, laughter, and cherished memories. Evelyn’s family was her greatest joy, and her unconditional love provided a foundation of strength and support for each member.

Evelyn’’s heart, however, belonged not only to her family but also to the town she called home. A lifelong Gloucester Rugby fan, she could often be found cheering passionately for her beloved team at the stadium or engaging in animated discussions about the latest match at the local pub. Her enthusiasm for rugby was contagious, and she shared this love with friends and family alike.

In addition to her roles as a teacher and a devoted mother, Evelyn had a unique talent that brought joy to countless children in the community. An amateur magician, she delighted in performing magic tricks that captivated the imaginations of the young and the young at heart. Her magical performances at birthday parties and community events earned her the affectionate title of “Evelyn the Invisible.”

Evelyn’’s departure leaves a void in the hearts of those who knew her, but her spirit will live on through the memories she created and the lives she touched. As we mourn her passing, let us also celebrate the remarkable woman she was—a teacher, a mother, a magician, and a friend.

The family invites friends and well-wishers to invite you to book in for the annual memorial lunch at Kingsholm listed on www.legacyofgloucester.com where we will come together to honor and remember the extraordinary life of Evelyn Locke.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that you support a project of The Gloucester Rugby Foundation, a cause that was dear to Evelyn’’s heart.

May she rest in peace, and may her memory be a source of comfort and inspiration to all who were fortunate enough to know her.
